How It Works

This Quantum Dice Roller is built using a serverless architecture hosted on AWS. When you click the "Roll Dice" button, the following process takes place:

• A REST API, created with AWS API Gateway, acts as the entry point for the request. It forwards the request to an AWS Lambda function, which executes the backend logic.
• The Lambda function makes a call to AWS Braket to execute a quantum circuit using a QCPU sitting in a fridge somewhere in Silicon Valley. The circuit creates a uniform superposition across three qubits and interprets it in terms of binary values from 000 to 101. These binary states are then mapped to the faces of the die.
• The cost widget above displays the accumulated cost on my AWS account this month. If the cost exceeds $10.00, the application switches to a free AWS quantum simulator for cost efficiency that acts virtually identically.

How Is This Any Different Than Rolling a Normal Die and Then Throwing 31 Cents in the Trash?

Okay, you got me. This site is just a curiosity and a way to try out some AWS utilities. There are some practical uses for QCPUs, such as creating more secure keys for cryptography or assisting in certain physics simulations, but this die is pretty much identical to a normal one for most people. But, if you subscribe to the Many Worlds theory of quantum mechanics, each time you roll this die, you're unravelling the universe into 6 threads of reality, one where you rolled each digit. You could use this to make hard decisions and feel secure that somewhere out there is another version of you who's doing whatever option you didn't take.

Of course, Neocopenhagenists would say that that's stupid and ridiculous. But they're a bunch of sticks-in-the-mud.
